MANGO BAG: The dawning of a new era

I had a dream where I was trying to write "nanobangbang" on a chalk board but i kept writing "mango" instead of "nano." Finally I gave up and wrote "mango" and tried to move on the "bang" but the N wouldn't come...

Thus, I was left with: MANGO BAG

The Tentative Album Arrangement (7)

nbb.7 = THE SECRETS ALBUM

So I have written a story and broken it up into seven "movements." Melissa Torrent has the whole story and is writing the lyrics. Different musicians will work on different movements. Participants only know what goes on in their movement and will not know the entire story until they hear the whole album. ((( not talking about vocals yet )))

*Tentative Arrangement* {instrumental}

1. THE MANUSCRIPT
Winston Chapman, Sara Berger

2. VERTIGO
Johnny Cisneros, Chad Allen, Eli Welbourne, Christine Aprile

3. MORNING TIME
David Longoria, Jason Chronis, Allison Moore, Cari Palazzolo

4. THE READING
Melissa Torrent, Allison Moore, Spencer Dobbs

5. DISCOVERY
Sara Berger, Henna Chou, Nick Smith

6. SECRETS & THE SUBCONSCIOUS
Eric Shaefer, Hannah Liddell

7. ON THE HILL
Stefanie Franciotti, Christine Aprile, Angel Polacheck

We will record in early November. We have some interesting instruments on this album: bassoon, ocean harp, saw, trombone. I'm so excited already. Winston & Sara have set it in motion with the first movement and I'm already so inspired.

The release of the album will coincide with a performance that contains a theatrical aspect (silent narrative). The event will also be the release of the published story.

NBB.7 THE SECRETS ALBUM

yesterday it was a party and today it's an album. one day there will be an album party that will coincide with the story publication release.

||| t h e ≈ s e c r e t s ≈ a l b u m |||

Everything is coming together from the ground up and we will be recording in early November.

The album is based on a story about a husband and a wife. The theme is secrets and the subconscious. The story is broken up into seven movements.

Picture 27

Picture 27

Picture 27Picture 27

Picture 27Picture 27Picture 27

Melissa Torrent has the entire story outline and she is working on the lyrics. Also, Allison Moore and Sara Berger know the whole story. For once it's not just me who will know the whole scope. (I have learned that, with nanobangbang, if I'm the only one who knows the big picture that's a lot of weight on just me).

Contributors are given their movement (portion of the story) to add their unique sounds as textural layers. Participants include: Winston Chapman, David Longoria, Eli Welbourne, Chad Allen, Christine Aprile, Hannah Liddell, Jason Chronis, Spencer Dobbs, Henna Chou, Cari Palazzolo, Stefanie Franciotti, Angeliska Polacheck, Eric Shaefer, Allison Moore, Melissa Torrent, Sara Berger and more(tba).

So the idea is that no one will know the rest of the story until they listen to the entire album. This way each movement will have its own distinct sound, but there will an underlying narrative glue..

Picture 26

The album release will coincide with the publication of the story: Secrets on a Hill.

It's gonna cost money to make this album. Money for recording, money for copies of the album art, money for distribution. Feel free to contribute! We're gonna need it.

Any donations would be appreciated. If people even donate $3, that will count for so much after a while. donate to deena.hyatt@gmail.com Thank you so much. It takes a village...

I believe in the power of mysterious overtones,

9AM Friday Morning

Sara & I discuss NBB.7- THE SECRETS ALBUM amongst kittycats and over french toast, bacon, blueberries, and David Lynch Coffee.

9AM Friday Morning

She shared with me her & Winston's recordings of their first practice for the album based on a story. Sara on bassoon, Winston on fretless bass. They had never worked/played together before nanobangbang. In fact, they had not yet even me even though they were acquainted with eachother after Way No Way & Soft Healer played a show.

I am so utterly impressed with the sounds they are making (it's just their first meeting!) and she is so utterly excited by the project, we decide that (along with Melissa and Allison), Winston & Sara will become the backbone of the album. With others contributing layers upon it. Only knowing the part of the story that coincides with the movement they are adding textures too. When everyone listens to the album, only then will they know the whole story...

The Compound

Yesterday Amanda Jones (also a new nbb member) came with me to check out the space where NBB.6 will be.
@ The Compound on Saturday September 19th for CotFG.

IMG_0614

Quick clarification: originally NBB.6 was going to be THE SECRETS SHOW. But I was asked to do something for Church of the Friendly Ghost's TENT REVIVAL on Saturday September 19th.

Saving the SECRETS SHOW for NBB.7 (because the SECRETS SHOW will take a while to prepare). Plus, I've been really into exploring conceptual movement in the last 2 nbb shows, but there is no room for dance in the SECRETS SHOW.

NBB.6 @ 8pm only 10 minutes long

The show will be at The Compound which is right near Scoot Inn. I hadn't been there before actually. Very rad layout. And very conducive to the CotFG Tent Revival event because there's all these nooks and crannies, a very large outdoor space, and a HUGE stage. There will be a lot of things going on that fine Saturday: games, raffle prizes, tarot card reading, cake walk.. gonna be funn and a good cause.

New Member

Utterly successful first meeting with the newest member of our illustrious collective...

Please welcome: SARA BERGER!

Classically trained bassonist, with an incredible singing voice. And most importantly, a fabulous and collaborative personality. She works at Tequila Mockingbird and is in a new band called Soft Healer.

She will be joining Nanobangbang for the 7th show. The SECRETS SHOW.

We will be releasing the NBB.7 album in October and doing the show in November.

I gave her and Winston the beginning outline of the story, with suggestions for the feel of the music. They will be working on the first three movements of the set. They do not know how it ends. Only Allison, Melissa and I know the whole story. Mysteries will unravel on that fateful nbb.7 night.

NBB.6: Secrets

Melissa, Allison, Christine and I are going to work on a 20 minute set for NBB.6 based on a theme/concept/idea/story we are working on. I'm envisioning epic qualities as we span moods and genres.

Don't worry -- Nanobangbang is not forgetting the variety show aspect of our mission. After we have the skeleton I will ask other musicians to add texture & atmosphere to each song.

So, there will still be that quality of Nanobangbang that I love: where I ask a new person to come up on stage for each piece. However, there will be a thread running throughout the show so there is more preconceived control overall.

Also, I am continuing on my dance path...

It will be a 3 part show:
Starting with Dance
Transitioning to Music
Ending in Text/Speech

NBB.3

SIX

So after much thought I've decide on Nanobangbang SiX.

First I'll tell what I've learned.

I've learned that although I love the variety and spontaneity of Nanobangbang shows, the unexpected quality that creates so much excitement also creates a lot of tension/anxiety. Too many unknown factors. Too many people. Too little time and money. I'm very organized and on top of things (ask NBB members about color coded emails), and I've been very pleased with the turn out, and the *feeling* of each show, however, I'm always left feeling it can be even better; more refined.

If we had more time/money to prepare for each show, we could pull it off. There is no lack of talent. However, the ambition of changing set-up and line-up with each song, remains difficult. And I can't ask for more time because then we would be a band and the demands would be different.

The other thing I've learned is that it's very difficult to do all the production myself. Organizing everyone, figuring times and dates, emails, phone calls, then the promo, fliers, invites, etc. All the details: costumes, set list, and this time I made a zine. I need to learn how to distribute better or do less (although that doesn't seem to be an option considering I always think I fall short- even though it's a relatively large production considering the resources). I was happy that Cari & Christine and others stepped up to the plate in the end when I was too tired. But my performance did suffer because of all the stress in production and unexpected last minute issues.

So I have figured out a solution/idea for the next show...

Success.

Last night was incredible. The whole evening.

Will go into more later, I have packing to do, but...

NBB.5 came together so complexly and intricately.

A black cat even came and visited us on stage.

Over 200 people were there, fantastic for a Sunday night.

More later ... and will post photos as soon as they get to me! Samantha Gore, Eli Welbourne, and Fernando Flores were taking photographs so there will be some good ones!
Nick Smith got video.. though I'm reluctant to share much of that. I find the LIVE aspect especially important for nanobangbang-- being that it is a one time occasion. It's special and when you are not in that space and time, it loses meaning and intention. Being that it is a one time occasion, capturing it for documentation's sake seems all the more important.

I think a new favorite way to describe nbb might be..
spec·ta·cle (spkt-kl)
Noun
1.a. Something that can be seen or viewed, especially something of a remarkable or impressive nature.
b. A public performance or display, especially one on a large or lavish scale.

c. A regrettable public display, as of bad behavior: drank too much and made a spectacle of himself.
2. spectacles
a. A pair of eyeglasses.
b. Something resembling eyeglasses in shape or suggesting them in function.

spectacle
Noun
1. a strange, interesting, or ridiculous scene
2. an impressive public show
: the opening ceremony of the Olympics was an impressive spectacle
3. make a spectacle of oneself to draw attention to oneself by behaving foolishly [Latin spectare to watch]

Stef's Swimming Song

Rosemary and Stef worked asses off yesterday and came up a with a new song than the one Stef introduced to us last. Now they are both playing keys, Stef also sings, Rosemary also works the drum machine, and I'm doing the same percussion as I was last time (effected mic on a floor tom) but also the tambourine stick and sing once.

Super liking the new song but totally different vibe than the previous one. Which was Stef on distorted bass and Rosemary on slide guitar. This one is a sweeter song. The other one had a pocahaunted vibe.

Show's tomorrow night. NBD

Also got pile of clothes to choose from goodwill good price. Going for a Miami Vibe I think becauae of my pool. Was Cari's idea to tweak the standard Nanobangbang scheme of black & white, now it's white and black. We added a dash of red to everyone, one article thanks to Christine.

Eating chocolate covered espresso beans.

Feel like drinking wine tomorrow night.

NBB Definition/Explanation

I'm currently refining the wording of what exactly Nanobangbang is. As you probably know, it's not a band... it's kind of a collective.

New specification:

Nanobangbang is a vehicle for participants to experiment with new ideas, sounds, and instruments. An opportunity for new collaborations. It is a vision for a special event. Although each show is always one time only, the creative comradery outlasts each performance and expands our artistic resources.

Meeting Notes

Ahhh! Pool Side Meeting was such a success! After the meeting adjourned I leaped into the pool. Let's see.. developments: added Cari on guitar to Rosemary's song, Rosemary & I to Stef's song, an "alien" to Allison's song, some more percussion to Cari's song. And overall excitement as we shared our songs with one another.

Figured out our clothing scheme. And distributed.

Finalized the stage plot for the show (which will most likely adjust once in the space).

NBB.5StagePlot

I have a really good feeeling about this one. I want to thank CotFG's Allissa & Amanda for telling me that I could only use ladies for this show... it's turned out really well; the dynamic has been super.

News!

- Finally found a boombox w/ working tape dec and radio!
- SVT approved for us to move the risers. I don't know if you've been to a Church of the Friendly Ghost event, well you should, but anyways they often take place is that intimate space when you first come in. But the capacity's small, and so we are gonna rearrange the space.
- Started the zine for the show.
- Organized NBB.5 "meeting" which is actually a pool party.

Melissa & Allison's Songs for NBB.5: HIGH FIVE

Today Melissa and Allison and I nanobanged, practicing for the June 7th show.

I would like you to know that this show will also be Melissa's CD RELEASE of "SONGS FOR EMMA KOONZ"-- a beautifully self-illustrated special addition debut album: think The Shaggs but Linda Perhacs. Disjointed, sweet, spooky and intimate. "Created by direct inspiration of Emma Kunz."

Furthermore, I'm excited to announce that we will release a NANOBANGBANG ALBUM which is not an Album at all but a collection of proto-songs-to-be, ideas, homemade demos.

But let me tell you a bit about practice:

For Allison's song "Creature In The Bathroom"

Allison will be playing classical guitar and for the bridge playing keys and she will be singing the melody. Deena will be playing keys and doing the talking part and singing harmonies. Melissa will surprise you.

For Melissa's song "Emma Goes To America"

Melissa will be playing classical guitar and singing. I will be playing classical guitar..doing something entirely different than Melissa. Allison will either play keys or bass we couldn't decide.

nanobanging: practice for June 7th show.

Nanobangbang

SUMMARY:

A Variety Show That Is A Special Event Full of Surprises. DOH and friend's ongoing vision / collective. A project in song, dance, text and performance.

Nanobangbang is a vehicle. It is not as much a band, although bands can be formed or displayed as a part of the event. Nanobangbang is an ongoing vision / collective / musical and performance art project adventure experiment. It's often a variety show, and always full of surprises. Part solo and part collaboration, the performance aspect of the special event is often emphasized with a flair for the theatrical. Some special guests have included: Elana Logsdon (Krazayzay), Eric Shaefer, Chad A: (Low Red Center), Allison Moore & Dakota Smith (Peel), Kevin Adickes (Moth!Fight!), Winston Reed Chapman (Gayle Gold), Sam Detergent (Gary Barftits), Kai Mantch, Michael Young, Henna Chou (Fiction, Many Birthdays), The Liddell Sisters Reading, and Belaire's Cari Palazzolo, Eli Welbourne, Christine Aprile.

ABOUT:

DOH comes up with an idea for NBB and purposes it to people or VISA VERSA. Members vary from show to show and so too does the set. In each show DOH draws from current inspiration and proposals, takes into consideration the space, and must scale down the vision to her means thus compromising the vision. Maybe one day a full Nanobangbang can be executed with the proper resources of time and money.

MISSION:

1) To provide accessible entertainment unafraid of experimental innovation.

2) Beauty. Thoughtfulness. Expansion. Variety. Talent. Put on a Show. Expression of Concepts and Feelings. Eclecticism. Collaboration. Innovation. Movement. Performance. Referencing. Commenting. Humor. Collective Unconscious. Just Do It.

3) To execute visions and to allow collaborators another vehicle for expression aside from their other projects or just in general.
